Student Assistant, Ohio State Athletics Communications

In August 2012, I began working as a student assistant for Ohio State’s Athletics Communications department. This job is two-fold: it involves lots of feature and press release writing as well as a good amount of media relations in assisting with game day operations for the varsity sports. Each student is assigned to specific sports that are our main focus for our writing and website content, but we also get to work at various sporting events throughout the year.

As a team, the Athletics Communications department writes feature stories, updates social media, photographs events, collects statistics during game, updates team biographies/schedules/rosters and other aspects of the website, sends press releases out and act as a liaison between the media and the student-athletes and coaches of OSU Athletics.

I currently cover and contribute content for: men’s football, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, synchronized swimming, men’s gymnastics, women’s tennis and women’s golf. I have also gained experience working with StatCrew, the standard for statistical software across the sporting world for several sports.

Below are examples of my work including press releases, recaps, and feature stories:

Public Relations Internship at the Wexner Center for the Arts:

The Wexner Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary art institute located on Ohio State’s campus with an international reputation for providing a first-class experience in exhibitions, performing arts, film & video and public programming. As a Marketing Intern, I had many tasks. I maintained and updated an extensive list of media contacts on an Excel document and online database as well as created media lists from these databases. I researched and compiled a complete list of Wexner media coverage over the past year and collaborated with the design department to create a book to be given to the Board of Trustees. I also drafted several press releases, media blasts, and weekly emails sent to members. You can check out the Wex press page here: www.wexarts.org/about/press

Public Relations Student Society of America: SHIFT Campaign

The Public Relations Student Society of America is an undergraduate group of students and local professionals striving to learn more about the industry through weekly meetings, presentations from local professionals, national conferences, and a student-run PR firm. The PRactice connects students to local companies by enabling them to contribute to a campaign. Our chapter’s website contains more information: http://prssaohiostate.wordpress.com/

As a part of the PRactice, I was assigned to SHIFT. SHIFT is a soon-to-be launched mobile application funded by The Ohio State University to be a resource guide for its over 60,000 students by helping to improve Student Life and student wellness. The application connects people together by encouraging campus involvement and providing information on opportunities and resources to improve overall student wellness. The link below leads to our portfolio including our social media strategy, print collateral, online newsletter and other related materials. As an integral member of this team, I was involved in all aspects of this project and am proud of the materials we presented to our clients.

Ohio Union Activities Board

The Ohio Union Activities Board is the main student programming organization at The Ohio State University bringing musicians, speakers, and other entertainers to campus. It is a selective group of around 160 undergraduates who function as a team to provide an outstanding collection of student events. Some of the top names OUAB hosted in 2012-13 are: O.A.R. on the Oval, Bill Hader, Jane Goodall, Kal Penn, Nicholas Sparks and Dancing with the Stars!

You can check out the official website here: www.ouab.osu.edu. In my freshman year, 2011-12, some notable appearances were: Anderson Cooper, Giuliana Rancic, Tim Gunn, Seth Meyers, Ross Mathews, Hope Solo & Alex Morgan and Skrillex.

I was a Project Leader for the OUAB Presents E! Sensation Giuliana Rancic event held on May 6, 2012. Giuliana Rancic hosts E! News, is on E! Live From the Red Carpet, stars on her reality show Giuliana & Bill, and is a published author, among many others. I personally proposed that she come to campus, called her agent, and began the negotiations. Once we had her signed on, I, along with my committee head, planned the event – coordinating the volunteers, assisting the marketing team, assembling her accommodations, and introducing her to the crowd at the event. It was an unforgettable experience and a dream come true for me to introduce and meet one of my biggest role models and to share this with my campus.

In the 2012-13 school year, I earned the Marketing Committee Member of the Year for my contributions to the committee. It was an absolute honor to receive this recognition and I am so grateful. This year, I contributed marketing and promotional materials as well as post-event support for The League, Max Brooks, Dancing With the Stars! and others.

I earned the 2012-13 Marketing Committee Member of the Year and also received the Wendell Ellenwood Scholarship. Such a great evening!
